Top 5 Social Media Plays of the Week

5. VETO VENGEANCE

Kobe Bryant turned a cute photo of his daughter and Chris Paul’s son playing basketball during All-Star Weekend into a joke at the NBA’s expense:

The NBA controversially vetoed a trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers in December 2011.

4. JORDAN DON’T KERR

All-Star Sunday also happened to fall on Michael Jordan’s 50th birthday, prompting a ton of praise for the global icon. TNT analyst and former Jordan teammate Steve Kerr had this to say:

Even though Kerr, the most accurate three-point shooter in NBA history, was a huge part of those three Bulls championships from 1996 to 1998, it’s clear that he knows what was actually going on.

 3. FULL COURT FASHION

All-Star weekend was not only a celebration of basketball, it was also a chance for NBA players to showcase other talents. Take the league’s leading scorer, Kevin Durant, for example:

Not only is he the best scorer alive, he’s writing for Gentlemen’s Quarterly. The fact that I don’t even know what “sartorial” means makes this all the more impressive.

2. ROOMMATE REPROACH

The MLS may not be in the top 5 leagues in its country or even its sport, but it does seem to be growing in popularity in the States, partially because of personalities like Houston Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell:

You might remember William Hung and Evanescence from 2004.

1. THE NEW NORMAL

This week, the number one social media play deservedly goes to former U.S. soccer player Robbie Rogers, who became one of the first active professional athletes to leave the closet. He made the announcement in a tweet on Friday:

The link went to a post on his website in which Rogers announced that he was gay and that he was retiring to live his life as “a free man.” Here’s to getting things off your chest.

Overtime

Back in 2002, when Will Smith was preparing to play Muhammad Ali in Michael Mann’s famous biopic, he spent some time sparring with the man himself and practicing his southern drawl. Check it out:
